Not one to be typecast, soprano Naomi Forman has done it all. Her interests range from Lieder to theatre, and bel canto to Broadway. The Edmonton Sun described her as a singer who could act, and the Winnipeg Free Press hailed her as an actor who could sing!

Naomi has a Master’s degree in music from Boston University (Massachusetts) where she studied with Susan Ormont (Director of New York’s “The Opera Project”) and did her undergraduate work at the University of Manitoba with baritone Mel Braun. She has done additional training at the Banff Centre and Opera Nuova.

In addition to teaching at Brandon University and the Eckhardt-Gramatté Conservatory, Naomi is a sought-after voice/speech adjudicator at festivals across the province, coaches community musical theatre groups, and directs a workshop for the Conservatory called The “I’ve always wanted to learn more about singing” Workshop for adults wanting to improve their vocal technique, breath control and stage presence.

Naomi’s credits include Winnipeg Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Dry Cold Productions, Rainbow Stage, Opera Nuova and the Opera Project, and guest appearances with the WSO, The Brandon Chamber Players and Opera in the Park for Manitoba Opera. She was a member of the Winnipeg Singers for four years, and was the featured soloist in Mendelssohn’s “O for the Wings of a Dove” on the Winnipeg Singer’s,“O Praise the Lord” CD.

Above all, Naomi’s favourite role is that of ‘mom” to daughters Ava and Anne. She and husband Kent live in Brandon, Manitoba where Kent is the Owner/General Manager of Forman Honda.

Quips and Quotes:

“Character roles are the backbone of any Gilbert and Sullivan Opera and Ruddigore is no exception. Brandonite Naomi Forman as Mad Margaret was mesmerizing, with her wild eyes and sweeping dramatic movements. While she was onstage you couldn’t take your eyes off her – she has that kind of star power. Statuesque even when barefoot, she writhed on the ground, producing a screech that sounded astonishingly like a seagull. And, she can sing. Her duet in Act II with her new husband, Sir Despard Murgatroyd, was one of the most hilarious of the show. – Gwenda Nemerofsky, Winnipeg Free Press, Ruddigore

“All three singers were notable, Forman with bright a coloratura soprano that is especially lovely inher serious arias” -The Edmonton Sun, Amelia Goes to the Ball staring Naomi Forman (Amelia) Gene Wu (husband) and Paul Ouellette (lover)

Naomi Forman, as Eurydice, is the highlight of a cast that took on their over-the-top roles with relish and energy. -DT Baker, The Edmonton Journal, Orfée aux Enfers

One thing that impressed me was that Naomi was more than willing to drive in from Brandon for every rehearsal, and, amazingly, she was never late. She was always there when you needed her, and that indicates her attitude to everything. She takes it on and she does it. -Glen Harrison, founder and artistic director, The Winnipeg Gilbert and Sullivan Society, as quoted in the Brandon Sun
