Dr. Kathryn Hyndman

Associate Professor – Nursing (On Sabbatical 7/1/12-12/31/12)

Dr. Hyndman is a Registered Nurse and a 1972 graduate of the Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN 1987) from the University of Victoria, a Master of Nursing (MN 1993) from the University of Manitoba, and a PhD in Nursing (PhD 2005) from the University of British Columbia. She joined the Brandon University Faculty of Health Studies in 2004.

Dr. Hyndman’s research interests lie in the area of knowledge translation:evidence synthesis; evidence transfer; and utilisation.Her dissertation research was entitled
An Evaluation of a Dissemination Intervention to Enhance Registered Nurses’ Use of Clinical Practice Guidelines Related to Tobacco Reduction.
She has established a program of research that involves promoting health and reducing illness through the dissemination and uptake of clinical practice guidelines on tobacco reduction by Registered Nurses and nursing students, in the context of the organisational environments in which they practice.

Dr. Hyndman is Principal Investigator (PI) and project lead of a new network of multi-disciplinary researchers who are studying health professional pre-licensure education in tobacco control and smoking cessation. Students’ basic preparation in tobacco control is of fundamental importance in understanding health professional capacity in treating tobacco use and dependence. A research planning grant entitled
A Survey of Health Professionals’ Training in Tobacco Reduction Counselling on the Canadian Prairies
funded by the Canadian Tobacco Control Research Initiative launched this research and Dr. Hyndman is working with her colleagues across Canada in this field.

Dr. Hyndman is the Primary Reviewer for an evidence synthesis project entitled
The Effectiveness of Tobacco Intervention Education on Health Professional Students’ Health Promotion Practice:A Systematic Review.

Dr. Hyndman is PI of a qualitative study that was funded by the Brandon University entitled
The Informed Integration of Clinical Practice Guidelines in Nursing Education.
This study examines the perspectives of university nurse educators regarding the implementation of clinical practice guidelines into their teaching practice.

Recently, she is a co-investigator of a research study funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Manitoba Health Research Council (MHRC) entitled
Healthy Campus: Rural Postsecondary Students Collaborate to Improve the Health of Their Campus Communities
that involves the study of students’ perspectives of university and college communities in two rural cities in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Dr. Hyndman is currently serving as a Steering Committee member on the
Registered Nurses Association of Ontario National Nursing Best Practice Smoking Cessation Initiative
(RNAO 2010-2011). The project is funded by Health Canada and focuses on the national dissemination and implementation of the RNAO best practice guideline
Integrating Smoking Cessation Counselling into Daily Nursing Practice.

She has published articles in the Canadian Nurse, Canadian Journal of Nursing Research, Health Policy, and the Journal of Family Nursing.

Dr. Hyndman teaches courses in the undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing program. Her teaching includes research methods, evidence-based practice, professional nursing practice, leadership and management, quality nursing practice environments, and brief intervention counselling for tobacco reduction. Dr. Hyndman is leading the integration of smoking cessation counselling education in the Bachelor of Nursing program. This initiative was originally funded by the Western Region Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing and has been integrated in the curriculum at Brandon University for the past four years.

Since 2007 Dr. Hyndman has served as a Board member of the Manitoba Lung Association. She is a resource for, and a member of, the Brandon Epilepsy Support group.
