Mary joined Geography in September 2016, and is teaching the following undergraduate courses this term:

She received her doctorate from the University of Oxford (UK, 2006) and has since worked at Lakehead University – Orillia as Assistant Professor, University of Reading (UK) as Lecturer in Geomorphology, and Brock University as a research fellow. She is a trained Geomorphologist with degrees also from the University of Toronto.

Dr. Thornbush specializes in rock weathering research and has a developing interest in Urban Geomorphology.  Her research interests are within Geomorphology, Climate, and Landscape change.

She has over 50 publications since 2004 and has disseminated her work in North America and Europe at various conferences and workshops since 2000. She is an active editor, and has been a guest editor of various special issues recently appearing in journals such as Applied Geography (Special Issue: Archaeogeomorphology), Area (Special Section: Geography, urban geomorphology and sustainability), Zeitschrift für Geomorphologie (Supplementary Issues: Photogeomorphology and Landscape Change), and more since 2012.

She has also coauthored books on Geomorphological Fieldwork (Elsevier, 2014), Photographs Across Time: Studies in Urban Landscapes (Bentham Science, 2015), and Vehicular Air Pollution and Urban Sustainability: An Assessment from Central Oxford, UK (Springer, 2015). Dr. Thornbush is working on another couple of books, including Adaptation to Coastal Storms in Atlantic Canada (Springer, 2017), Urban Geomorphology: Landforms and Processes in Cities (Elsevier, 2017), and Changing Deathscapes: Headstones in Urban British Churchyards (led by S.E. Thornbush, Bentham Science, 2017).
