12:483 History of Physical Anthropology

Course Overview: The History of Physical Anthropology is structured as a seminar course where students are expected to complete the readings prior to class and come prepared to discuss the readings and both answer and ask questions. The course is designed to be flexible and readings will be added throughout the course. The practice of physical anthropology today would not exist if it weren’t for the people that came before. Developing a knowledge base and appreciation of the history of physical anthropology is vital in understanding how the discipline has developed and will aid in identifying how the discipline can continue to move forward. Students will become familiar with the key figures in physical anthropology and their contributions. Students will also explore how context, both social and professional, have impacted the discipline. The role that physical anthropology has played in the concept of race and racism will be emphasized. Finally students will investigate the contributions made by Canadian physical anthropologists by researching and writing biographies.
