Course Description:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Long before evolutionary literary theorists argued for the adaptive value of fictions cognitive mapping and scenario-spinning, writers experimented with imagined futures, alternate histories, and fragmented selves.\u00a0 The last 40 years, in particular, have seen a rich series of fictive worlds that are neither completely fantastic nor fully representative of the world we inhabit. Works to be studied could include OBrien, Going After Cacciato<\/em>; <\/em>Rushdie, Midnight’s Children;<\/em> <\/em>Bakis, Lives of the Monster Dogs<\/em>; Chabon, The Yiddish Policemen’s Union<\/em>; McCarthy, The Road<\/em>.\u00a0 We will also study at least two films, possibly Wenders & Handke, Wings of Desire<\/em> (Der Himmel \u00fcber Berlin<\/em>) and Jeunet & Laurant, Am\u00e9lie<\/em> (Le Fabuleux destin d’Am\u00e9lie Poulain<\/em>). Titles may change with little notice.<\/p>\n
