The course will include short stories, poetry, maybe a play, and several novels, possibly Narayan,<em> The Vendor of Sweets<\/em> (India); Kiran Desai, <em>The Inheritance of <\/em><em>Loss<\/em> (India); Chris Abani, <em>Graceland <\/em>(Nigeria); V.S. Naipaul, <em>The Mystic Masseur <\/em>(Trinidad). Titles may change with little notice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Assignments:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. See BU <em>General Calendar<\/em> 4.2.2 Academic Integrity.\u00a0 No cell phones in class.<\/p>\n<p>For the very shy: in place of class participation you may hand in, 5 times during the course, short (1 page, double-spaced, typed) commentaries, not plot summaries, on the text under discussion that day. These commentaries must be handed in <em>before<\/em> we discuss the reading in class, and are worth 2% each.\u00a0 No commentaries will be accepted after class discussions for <em>any<\/em> reason.\u00a0 It&#8217;s possible that a student may find readings and\/or discussions of controversial matters troubling.
