Through funding from a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Insight Development grant\u00a0 a Faculty of Health Studies\/Centre for Critical Studies of Rural Mental Health grant, and a Brandon University Research Committee Grant members of the Rural, Remote, and Northern Gendered-Violence Research Program are currently working on three research projects.<\/p>\n

#1: A pilot project exploring the experiences of childbirth and transition to parenthood for individuals with a history of sexual violence in adulthood.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n

O1: Understand the childbirth and transition to parenthood experience of birthing individuals with a history of sexual violence in adulthood;
\nO2:\u00a0 Develop a theory grounded in the voices of participants; and
\nO3: Understand health professionals’ experiences supporting birthing individuals with a history of sexual violence in adulthood to refine the theory further.<\/p>\n

#2: Promoting empathy and understanding of the lived experience of sexual violence through a graphic novel: Implications for Psychiatric Nursing and Nursing Education<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Objectives:<\/p>\n

O1. Evaluation to what extent BN and BScPN students have a change in attitudes, beliefs, and knowledge about sexual violence, consent, and rape myth after participating in a structured learning experience featuring the “It happened to me and it’s not okay” educational resource.<\/p>\n

O2. Determine if the graphic novella and associated instructional materials increase BN and BScPN students comfort level discussing sexual violence and healthy relationships with patients.<\/p>\n

Candice Waddell-Henowitch (she\/her)\"\"
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Candice Waddell-Henowitch is a registered psychiatric nurse, an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatric Nursing, and more importantly a mom to a beautiful (and busy) 2- year old daughter. When she is not busy with work, research, and chasing after her 2-year old, she enjoys sewing, crafting, adventuring, and watching dramatic not- so real reality shows on TV with her husband.\u00a0 She also enjoys her work with community organizations and is currently the Past- President of the YWCA Westman Board of Directors, a member of the YWCA Canada board of directors, and a member of the BU ELC board, where her daughter attends daycare.<\/p>\n

Nadine Smith (she\/her)

Nadine Smith is a Registered Nurse and Associate <\/span><\/span>Professor in the Department of Psychiatric Nursing at <\/span><\/span>Brandon University, with a deep commitment <\/span><\/span>to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>promoting mental health and well-being. Outside of work, she enjoys staying active through fitness, gardening, and traveling with her family.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrea Thomson (she\/her)
\n\"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

Andrea Thomson is a Registered Psychiatric Nurse and Assistant Professor at Brandon University. Andrea primarily conducts qualitative research <\/span>regarding<\/span> health, mental health, and trauma. Andrea has over a decade of experience providing trauma-informed care in hospital, crisis, and community-based settings.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Ashley Stewart (she\/her)<\/strong>\"\"<\/p>\n

Ashley is a registered psychiatric nurse, raised in rural Manitoba, now living in Winnipeg with her husband and three children.\u00a0 Aside from nursing, she loves cooking, camping and chasing her three boys around!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tracy Young (she\/her)<\/strong>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Tracy is a Registered Psychiatric Nurse with 20+ years of extensive health system and community-based mental health experience. She grounds her work and nursing practice in a strengths-based approach to the grief\/life process and has worked with individuals, families, and groups through a wide range of mental health\/health concerns, illness, education, and adjustment. \"\"Tracy was born and raised in rural MB, and<\/span> continues to be grateful for every opportunity to connect with and give back to her community and the surrounding area. When not working, you can find Tracy, and her two girls, busy in<\/span> a variety of Arts activities and endeavors; seeking sunshine and the great outdoors; or just a quiet night at home with a movie and their cats.\u00a0<\/span>

Krista Murray (she\/her)\"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

Krista is m<\/span>om to a 3- and 4-year-old <\/span>and sp<\/span>ends her days <\/span>chasing<\/span>, <\/span>reading books and<\/span> baking with <\/span>them<\/span>, as well as<\/span> playing fetch with her two <\/span>cats<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>When time allows, she <\/span>crochets<\/span>,<\/span> embroiders<\/span>, and enjoys hiking.<\/span> As a <\/span>medical <\/span>anthropologist,<\/span> she is passionate about all things related to pregnancy<\/span>,<\/span> childbirth<\/span>, and <\/span>post<\/span>partum<\/span>, and how best to support birthing individuals.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hillary Derewianchuk (she\/her)\"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hillary <\/span>has recently completed her studies at Brandon University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in biology and a minor in religion. She aspires to pursue a career in the medical field, specifically focusing on women’s health. In her extra time, she enjoys crocheting, hiking with her rescue dog, Kylie, and spending quality time with friends and family<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Megan Van De Spiegle (she\/her)\"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

Megan is a student in the Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing program at Brandon University. She has a passion for reproductive mental health, which brought her to this team.
