Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Sudbury, Ontario born and raised,<br \/>\n<span>Playing video games is how I spent most of my days.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Chillin\u2019 out maxin\u2019 out relaxin\u2019 all cool,<\/span><br \/>\n<span>I was never a strong student in high-school.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span>I went to university to complete a degree,<\/span><br \/>\n<span>I did it because it was expected of me.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Academics wasn\u2019t something that I thought was fun, <\/span><br \/>\n<span>But I didn\u2019t want to waste my tuition. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><br \/>\n<span>So I gave it the old college try,<\/span><br \/>\n<span>And I learned that education could gratify.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span>At first it was courses in philosophy and law,<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/people.brandonu.ca\/watiern\/files\/2015\/11\/Books-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"Books\" width=\"205\" height=\"155\" class=\" alignright wp-image-56\" srcset=\"https:\/\/people.brandonu.ca\/watiern\/files\/2015\/11\/Books-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/people.brandonu.ca\/watiern\/files\/2015\/11\/Books-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/people.brandonu.ca\/watiern\/files\/2015\/11\/Books-640x480.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 205px) 100vw, 205px\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span>Dr. Donohue captured my interested and awe.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>We studied Postman, Plato, Mill, and Chomsky,<\/span><br \/>\n<span>We learned to challenge, resist, and question authority. <\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Then came courses in statistics, <\/span><br \/>\n<span>At the time the word made me feel hysterics, <\/span><br \/>\n<span>They appeared scary, daunting, and rife with intimidations, <\/span><br \/>\n<span>So I studied and practiced, and practiced, and practiced the equations, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/people.brandonu.ca\/watiern\/files\/2015\/11\/normal-300x158.png\" alt=\"normal\" width=\"143\" height=\"75\" class=\" alignright wp-image-61\" https:\/\/people.brandonu.ca\/watiern\/files\/2015\/11\/normal-640x336.png 640w, https:\/\/people.brandonu.ca\/watiern\/files\/2015\/11\/normal.png 1229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 143px) 100vw, 143px\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span>In the end, I passed all the evaluations.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span>I developed confidence in myself, where there was none before, <\/span><br \/>\n<span>So I studied even harder, so that I can learn even more. <\/span><br \/>\n<span>I went to class, took notes, and read, <\/span><br \/>\n<span>I thought \u201cthis isn\u2019t too bad, I\u2019m not a pinhead\u201d.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Finally, it was a course in perception,<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/people.brandonu.ca\/watiern\/files\/2015\/11\/percevoir-184x300.jpg\" alt=\"percevoir\" width=\"133\" height=\"217\" class=\" alignright wp-image-83\" https:\/\/people.brandonu.ca\/watiern\/files\/2015\/11\/percevoir-640x1043.jpg 640w, https:\/\/people.brandonu.ca\/watiern\/files\/2015\/11\/percevoir.jpg 1908w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 133px) 100vw, 133px\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/people.brandonu.ca\/watiern\/files\/2015\/11\/Book2.jpeg\"><\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span>That made me realize my dream profession. <\/span><br \/>\n<span>At the time, the Matrix was a popular movie,<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Questioning the nature of reality was pretty groovy. <\/span><br \/>\n<span>In perception, we studied how do we see, taste, touch, smell and hear,<\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u201cThis is what I wanted to think about for the rest of my career.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span>So I went to Ottawa, to complete a Ph.D,<\/span><br \/>\n<span>In the hopes of becoming a professor in experimental psychology. <\/span><br \/>\n<span>Dr. Collin and Dr. Lamontagne left a big impact on me,<\/span><br \/>\n<span>They both shaped my understanding of how we see. <\/span><br \/>\n<span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span>I was fortunate to obtain a position at BU, <\/span><br \/>\n<span>Where hopefully I&#8217;ll discuss
