About Me

Hello! My name is Heather Johnston and this is my eighth year teaching at Brandon University. This year, I am teaching Introduction to Financial Accounting, Intermediate Accounting, both Assets and Equities, as well as the Advanced Financial Accounting (consolidations) and Accounting Theory classes. In previous years I have taught Introduction to Management Accounting, Cost Accounting, Auditing, Tax, and Corporate Finance 1 & 2.

I am a Chartered Accountant, and I received my professional designation in 1986. I worked in public practice with Dunwoody and Company in Winnipeg and then in Brandon. I left public practice when my third son was born in 1992 and started teaching at Brandon University in the fall term of 1993. I returned to school myself in 1995 and completed the course work for my Master of Science in Accounting at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. I worked on my thesis while teaching full time, and completed my Masters degree in the fall of 1999. My thesis was in the field of auditing.

Just a few comments about my personal life so that you have the opportunity to get to know me. I have been married to my husband, Bill, for seventeen years and have three sons: Scott, who is twelve; Andrew, who is nine; and Paul, who is seven. Bill is a lawyer, and is a partner in a firm  in Brandon. Bill taught the Business Law classes at Brandon University last year. Our sons are involved in soccer, baseball, hockey, golf, skating lessons, swimming lessons, piano lessons and Y camp, so a significant portion of our free time is spent chauffeuring kids and watching or coaching their activities.

I love to read and enjoy a wide variety of music.  I am also an avid fan of live theatre.  Weather permitting, I like to golf and putter in my flower and vegetable gardens. My volunteer activities include sitting as a Board member on the Brandon Regional Health Authority. Prior to regionalization, I was a Board member for the Brandon General Hospital and have spent a total of thirteen years on these two boards.
