04.705 Guidance and the Classroom Teacher (Graduate 3 credit hours)

 

This course is an advanced study of the school guidance program with special emphasis on the role of the classroom teacher and the development of a comprehensive and developmental approach to providing school guidance and counselling services. This course will emphasize the foundational theoretical frameworks of Response to Intervention, Universal Design for Learning, and Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports. The focus of the course is on developing the leadership role of the school counsellor in creating and implementing a whole school approach to mental health promotion and to creating positive behavioural interventions and supports. Participants will also acquire knowledge on how to support teachers so that they can provide classroom-based wellness education using appropriate curricula.

04.353 Evaluation and Assessment (EY-MY) (Undergraduate 3 credit hours)

Using current provincial curricula and an emphasis on inclusive classroom practices, this course will instruct pre-service teacher candidates (EY-MY) in a range of formative and summative evaluation and assessment techniques that enable educators to evaluate and assess student learning. Pre-service teachers will be instructed in classroom-based assessment practices that reflect current provincial curricula in their grade areas. From a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) perspective, the course will also cover the ethics and administrations of Level A tests. The course informs pre-service teacher candidates about the importance of using assessment to drive instruction in order to meet the needs of all students in their classroom spaces. The course will also address practices to communicate student progress to care givers and other pertinent professional stakeholders.

04.353 Social Ecological Resilience (Graduate 3 credit hours). The purpose of this course is to extend understandings of “risk” and resilience into contextualized and relational perspectives based in contemporary theory and research. Students will examine resilience as a dynamic link between an individual and their multi-level, relational developmental system. In-depth analyses of resilience as a process facilitated by social ecological factors such as families, schools, and communities will be explored.

02.459 Introduction to ELA Methods (MY) (Undergraduate PENT Program 3 credit hours)

This course is an introduction to the methods, materials, and rationale for English Language Arts in the Middle Years classroom. It covers the development of literacy, the influence of outside school experiences on language acquisition and development, the role of linguistics, the inter- relationship of the six areas of English Language Arts, organization, and development of effective educational experiences for young adolescents in ELA, and an overview of useful teaching practices and methodologies in ELA.

03.351 Instructional Methods (EY-MY) (Undergraduate PENT Program 3 credit hours).

This is an introductory methods course designed to develop the skills and strategies used to teach all subjects in the Early and Middle Years. It includes the application of writing objectives, questioning strategies, and reaching closure and assessment of both lessons and units of instruction. The practical application of instructional methods to classroom situations will be an integral part of the course.

01.440 Teachers as Leaders (Undergraduate 3 credit hours)

Teacher leaders fil1 both formal and informal leadership positions and influence their schools largely through their credibility as effective teachers and the strong relationships they develop with members of the school community. Teacher leaders often contribute to the growth of leadership capacity in their school communities by providing mentoring, feedback, facilitation, and professional development. This course will explore the knowledge, skills, dispositions, and agency of teacher leaders as facilitators of change in educational contexts. Students will engage in self-assessment and explore various opportunities for engaging in leadership within the profession.

01.770 Issues and Trends in Educational Administration: Leadership with a Focus on Inclusion (Graduate 3 credit hours)

This course will provide opportunities for educational leaders to explore and develop the strength-based skills, knowledge, and strategies they need for building inclusive school communities, for supporting teachers, students, and educational assistants, and to develop connections with families, caregivers, and community members.

04.254 Inclusive Education and Adolescent Exceptionalities (MY-SY) (Undergraduate 3 credit hours).

The focus of this course is on the role of the MY/SY teacher in providing an inclusive classroom environment for a diverse student population. This course develops inclusive educational practices and provides a critical examination of the Manitoba context, including the Public Schools Amendment Act (Appropriate Educational Programming), and the concepts of exceptionalities, disabilities, and learner differences. Other topics for instruction and discussion include using a universal design for instruction, curriculum adaptations and modifications, and the provision of assistive technology.
