M.Y. Math Methods

Course Overview

The Manitoba middle-years Mathematics curriculum covers approximately 570 hours of classroom instruction.  In the 36 contact hours we have available in this course, there is no way we can address all aspects of the content that you will be expected to teach  By necessity, this is an introductory course with a focus on core aspects related to planning, organizing, and implementing a middle-years Mathematics program.  As such, the course deals with three key aspects of teaching:

  1. What is a math program?  How do I go about setting one up?
  2. How should I be teaching math?
  3. How should I be assessing math?

Mastery Grade Scale

The final grade for this course will be based on a mastery scale,  either Pass or Fail.

Teaching Student Centered Mathematics: Grades 5-8

Rational for suggesting this book?  Price.  Students tend not to buy
more expensive books.  But while this book is affordable, it is also
consistent with the philosophy and content of the Manitoba Math
curriculum.  However, don’t expect me to preach from this book; it is
recommended as a reference – and a good one at that! – to assist you
with the expected teaching and assessment methods of the Manitoba Math curriculum!

This book explains how to teach math so that students build on existing knowledge, rather than learn sets of algorithms without understanding their meaning. It offers a range of specific lessons for all math topics for grades 5 – 8, it explains how to teach the same topics to diverse learners, how to teach to the standards. It comes with amazing templates that are downloadable. It shows you how to take advantage of your existing math textbook, supplementing it to make it more student-focused.”
