CREAMS Research Lab

CREAMS Research Lab framework showing culture, regulation of learning, engagement, academic motivation, and success in education

The CREAMS Research Lab integrates culture, self-regulated learning, engagement, and motivation to advance equitable and impactful learning environments across diverse educational contexts.

CREAMS Research Lab: Culture, Regulation of Learning, Engagement, Academic Motivation, and Success

The CREAMS Research Lab, led by Dr. Aloysius C. Anyichie, is a research hub dedicated to advancing understanding of how culture shapes learning, motivation, and success across educational contexts. The lab brings together researchers, students, and educators to design and study learning environments that are inclusive, responsive, and impactful.

At the core of the lab’s work is the integration of culturally responsive pedagogy and self-regulated learning, operationalized through the Culturally Responsive Self-Regulated Learning (CR-SRL) Framework. This work positions the lab at the forefront of efforts to transform how teaching and learning are conceptualized and implemented in culturally diverse classrooms.

Research Focus

The CREAMS Lab focuses on:

  • Understanding how cultural, social, and contextual factors shape learners’ engagement and motivation
  • Designing and implementing instructional practices that support self-regulated learning
  • Collaborating with educators through researcher–practitioner partnerships
  • Advancing equity, inclusion, and student success in K–12 and higher education
  • Developing and validating tools, including the CR-SRL measurement and implementation frameworks

Current and Emerging Work

The lab supports a growing program of research that includes:

  • Classroom-based studies examining student engagement and motivation in authentic learning contexts
  • Professional development initiatives supporting educators in implementing the CR-SRL Framework
  • Cross-cultural and international collaborations across Canada, the Caribbean, and Africa
  • Ongoing development and validation of a Culturally Responsive Self-Regulated Learning (CR-SRL) Scale

Student and Research Opportunities

The CREAMS Lab provides opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to engage in:

  • Research design and data collection
  • Classroom-based research
  • Data analysis and scholarly writing
  • Collaborative and interdisciplinary projects

Prospective graduate students and postdoctoral researchers interested in research on self-regulated learning, culturally responsive pedagogy, motivation, and engagement are encouraged to get in touch.

Collaboration and Partnerships

The lab welcomes partnerships with:

  • Schools and school divisions
  • Universities and research institutions
  • International collaborators
  • Community and policy organizations

Collaborations focus on co-designing learning environments, advancing research, and translating knowledge into practice. Partnerships are particularly encouraged with institutions and organizations seeking scalable, research-informed approaches to improving student engagement and learning outcomes in diverse educational systems.

Looking Ahead

The CREAMS Research Lab is advancing toward becoming a scalable research and knowledge mobilization platform, supporting cross-cultural research, practitioner partnerships, and global collaboration. Plans include the development of a dedicated website featuring research projects, team members, tools, and partnerships.

The lab is committed to bridging research, practice, and policy to support meaningful and sustained improvements in student engagement and success.
